Pottery photography: Beyond Auto
Take full control of your camera & easily capture photos you’re proud to share!
No more defaulting to your cell phone for "good enough" images. Go from intimidated by your camera's settings to confidently capturing consistent, true-to-life, professional photos of your art!
Before we talk about the details, is Beyond Auto even for you?
Your regular camera is sitting there, collecting dust, because using your cell phone feels easier. But using your phone just gives you inconsistent results and leaves you endlessly frustrated. You’ve seen others create well-crafted, true-to-life photos and know there must be an easier way.
This is for you if...
You have a DSLR or mirrorless camera that's been collecting dust because the settings feel overwhelming
You get inconsistent results with your phone every time, even with the same setup, and you can't figure out why
Your photos never quite capture how your work actually looks in real life — especially the colors
This is NOT for you if...
Your phone camera is all you have right now — The Maker's Photography Styling System was actually made for you instead
You're hoping to photograph people, pets, or anything that moves. This course is built entirely around capturing the inanimate art & objects you create
You're looking to master artificial lighting, flash, or a full studio setup. But if that is your next question, The Community and our monthly photo Q&As were made for exactly that
You don't need to love photography.
You just need someone to finally explain it clearly.
Beyond Auto
Stop settling. Your work is too good to leave the creative direction up to your phone.
Together, we'll break down each essential camera setting, one at a time, with practical exercises that build your confidence while demystifying your DSLR or mirrorless camera.
By the end of this course, photographing in manual mode will feel easier than using your phone and save you more time! All while producing professional results that truly showcase your artwork.
But don’t take my word for it…
“Beyond Auto was absolutely liberating!
It cleared away the mystery of my machine so I can enjoy shooting in full manual mode and control the image capture.
Gone are the days of long editing sessions. Less time sitting at my computer means more time at my wheel!”

Hey there,
I’m Rebecca
For 14 years I worked as a professional photographer:
Full time, self-employed, with real clients and tight deadlines. No safety net, no ideal studio. Just me, my camera, and a new location every time with the pressure to deliver gorgeous photos no matter the circumstances.
That's exactly how I learned to stop guessing and start controlling every variable in front of me. Because when your income depends on the photos you come home with, "I'll fix it in editing" isn't a strategy.
I know what it takes to get consistent results (and why that’s often frustrating with a phone camera), but more importantly, I know how to explain using your camera in a way that doesn't require a photography degree to understand.
Beyond Auto exists because I kept watching talented makers default to their cell phone (even when a perfectly good camera was sitting in the closet) because manual mode felt too intimidating to touch.
A cell phone will always be a bit unpredictable. It's always in auto, always guessing, always making different decisions from one photo to the next. Manual mode is the opposite of that. It's total, repeatable control.
I'm here to cut straight to exactly what you need to know:
which 4 settings to change, how to change them, and why.
Through a proven, step-by-step process, Beyond Auto will help you…
Get consistent results every time you photograph your work, regardless of whether it's a sunny day or a cloudy one
Know exactly which of the four settings to adjust when your photos are too dark, too bright, or not quite capturing your glazes accurately
Take your regular camera off auto and into full manual, so every decision about how your photos look is yours to make, intentionally
Walk away with a repeatable personal process for your own camera, so photographing your work takes less time and less editing
But most of all,
this course will transform your process from taking dozens of phone shots hoping one works, to confidently capturing exactly what you want in just a few thoughtful images.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
The core settings we cover in this course - aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance - are fundamental to all DSLR or mirrorless cameras, no matter their age and we discuss any possible limitations of older cameras specifically in the lesson on ISO.
While newer cameras might have some fancy features, your older camera is completely capable of taking professional photos of your work (this class is not suitable for using a point & shoot camera that does not allow you to shoot in fully manual mode).
By taking Beyond Auto, you’ll know exactly how far you can push even your old camera and be able to make an informed decision about whether or not you actually need to spend that $1,000++ on something new.
-
Absolutely! This course is specifically designed for makers who feel intimidated by their camera's settings. We start from the very beginning, breaking down each setting one at a time. If you can find the 'on' button and know what model of camera you have, you're ready to start!
-
Not at all! While the course explains what to look for if you are shopping for equipment, you can achieve beautiful results with any DSLR or mirrorless camera and the lens it came with. It's about learning to use what you have effectively.
-
The course is designed to fit into any maker's busy schedule. Each lesson focuses on one setting at a time, and comes with guided practice suggestions to ensure you see the fastest impact in the least amount of time. Many students see improvement after just the first lesson!
On average, we suggest assuming Beyond Auto will take you 6 hours to complete.
Whether you decide to do that all in one day or break it up one lesson at a time is entirely up to what works best for you!
-
Yes, phones are incredibly convenient, but they're also constantly making automatic adjustments that lead to inconsistent results. Every time you move slightly or the light changes even a little, your phone recalculates everything - from brightness to color to focus - which is why you can take three photos of the same piece and get three completely different pictures.
Instead of fighting with your phone's automatic adjustments and spending hours editing, using your regular camera will allow you to capture consistent, professional images right from the start that need minimal editing - saving you time during and after!
-
Your access to the course materials is endless! As long as the Maker’s Playbook exists, you’ll have access to your course materials and let’s put it this way… Self-employed artists, like myself, aren’t known for retiring early ;-)
This means if there are every any new updates or bonus material added to Beyond Auto in the future, you’ll receive that too at no additional cost!
-
All course materials are recorded and with lifetime access, you can truly take this course at whatever pace works for you.

Well first: Do you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera? If not, start with MPSS — it's built to work with your phone and will make an immediate difference.
If you do have a dedicated camera available, then ask yourself this: If you look at your photos and think the setup feels off, start with MPSS. If you look at your photos and think the camera isn't doing what I want, you're in the right place.
But the most honest response to this question: Eventually, take both. Because they solve completely different problems.
MPSS is about what happens in front of the camera. Composition, props, color, creating a look that's cohesive and intentional… You can go a long way with your phone using those skills. Learning what makes a photo work is valuable no matter what camera you're holding.
But your phone has a limit because it only functions in auto. To achieve consistent, professional-looking cell phone photos, you have to work within its rules, not yours.
If you’re looking for total control for creative decisions like photographing on an all-white background or getting moody images? Well, that’s where manual mode comes in. When you're in control of your camera settings, you're in control of everything.
Having one of those “Ugh… I’m not sure…” moments?
I get it. If you have a question I haven't answered here, send me an email (education (at) makers-playbook (dot) com).
But let's get to the heart of the matter...
Think about how much time you currently spend on photos: taking dozens of shots hoping one works, fighting with settings you don't fully understand, and still ending up frustrated that the colors don't look quite right.
Now imagine knowing exactly which four dials to turn and why, capturing what you actually want in just a few confident shots, straight out of the camera.
That's what's possible when you're in control of your camera (instead of the other way around).
The skills you learn in the Beyond Auto aren't just about taking better photos.
It’s about getting back to what you love most: creating.
No more losing entire afternoons to photography. No more editing marathons. Just quick, confident photo sessions that capture your work exactly as it deserves to be seen: Beautifully.
